Andrea Sykes was born in Toronto, Canada in 1975. Her parents are of mixed ancestry including East Indian, British and Portuguese. In 2003, she decided to volunteer in India, where she learned more about her Anglo-Indian roots that started in the small mining town of Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). Her volunteer experiences in KGF as well as Bangalore led her to a career as an educator as well as to writing her first novel Tula.
During her first few years of teaching, Andrea completed her Masters in Education. She wrote her thesis on factors that influence educators to use student knowledge and identity to keep marginalized students engaged.
In addition to taking courses in education, Andrea received a certificate in the Humber School of Writing Program as well as various writing courses at University of Toronto.
